Cambrian Park Plaza & COVID-19
As your Councilmember I am committed to keeping you apprised of any updates to revitalize the Cambrian Park Plaza. On Thursday morning I had a Zoom meeting with Weingarten Realty, which owns the center. Like most everything right now, COVID-19 is slowing the project’s progress. The economic fallout from COVID-19 has produced staggering job losses, shuttered businesses, halted construction, and created a level of uncertainty unseen since the Great Recession.
Prior to the spread of COVID-19, the City of San Jose anticipated receiving a reinvigorated iteration of the redevelopment plans this summer. While Weingarten is still moving forward with their new plans at this time, COVID-19 has impacted this project as well. Once this public health crisis subsides, and the economic future of our region is more clear, Weingarten’s team and I will meet again to discuss their continuing ability to move forward with redevelopment of the center and timing for relaunching the project, which we still hope will be later this year.
When this time comes, we still plan to have many opportunities for our community to engage in thoughtful discussion around this project. These will start once we have something more discernible to discuss.
To share what you want to see at the Cambrian Park Plaza, please feel free to drop your comments in this survey. If and when Weingarten Realty submits plans to the City, my staff and I will begin to more actively and frequently engage the public; hopefully in person.
